another way in moving forward. Make your trip enjoyable. Call the accessibility department with the airline before you book your seat.
They usually will get you in a convenient seat for both you and your companion.
There was one time that we held up the plane for 35 minutes as I finally convinced them that my husband’s 6’5” frame would not fit in the seat they assigned. After some discussion, they moved us to the bulkhead and yes, we did get some stares as the other passengers were late to board. After I sent them the pictures of the burns on his knee, they have been very accommodating. Don’t give up!
We have had wonderful service with American Airlines. When I was putting this blog together, they were the only airline that had a direct telephone number and an email to their accessibility department. We always contact their department ahead of time. When we get to the airport everything is ready for us. They are not the airline that hurt my husband’s knees.
Remember that your items you need to bring with you, slideboard, etc. are not considered extra baggage and there is no additional charge. The telephone number for some of the airlines are listed below. The wheelchair people are private and do appreciate a tip. I bring plenty of ones, fives, and tens to have available when we travel.
On a humorous note: we were flying to Minneapolis for Christmas. I sent our daughters a picture when we landed that looked worse than it was….when they met us at the hotel the first words out of their mouths were “Mom, next year we are all flying to Arizona for Christmas.” Let’s just say, unintentionally, Curly’s long legs being carried by the accessibility person walking backwards helped get the kids to Arizona the next year. And their Mom just stood there and smiled, love those daughters!
