Moving Forward with Disabilities in Retirement, it is now time to go someplace special. Off to Tucson to get away from the heat. It was 3 degrees cooler and after the drive on Interstate 10 we arrived at our wonderful destination. Westin La Polama Resort and Spa.

We were early, however, the front desk made concessions, so we were able to check in. Outside we met with Paul, and he took care of our luggage and showed us to our lovely room that was designed for the disabled.

The bathroom was large enough for the wheelchair to navigate around the sink area. This is the first hotel/resort we have ever stayed in that had put the bar vertically with enough room for the wheelchair to get in front of which made it possible for Curly to be able to pull himself up. This bar works for either the tall or short person. The roll in shower also had a bar that could be used that way.

We then went and had lunch at the Azul Restaurant in the resort. Lillie was our waitress and suggest to me the Shrimp Tacos that were amazing and Curly enjoyed the Pork Belly Chicharrones. All the waitstaff were friendly and helpful. Lillie helped get Curly into the elevator so I could go up the stairs and meet him on the other side.

This resort was built in 1985. ADA was formed in 1990. The Westin has brought their facility up to compliance and we were able to maneuver around their grounds quite easily. They have covered verandas with wide walkways that keeps you cool during the warmer months. All of their pools have the chairlift that makes it easy for the disabled to get in and out of the water.

I was able to have a nice visit with their General Manager, Trevor Curran. We walked the premises and I noticed signage by the elevators that would point you in the right direction to which elevator you may need. Trevor mentioned that they currently are doing some upgrading on the paths and other areas. Moving forward, the upgrade that I was most excited about was their purchased of a van that is wheelchair accessible. It is now available to drive you within a 3-mile radius of the resort. As the driver of our van, this is huge. This means I can enjoy going out to dinner with my husband and someone else will be doing the driving. If we could have controlled the weather this would have been a dream time at a dream resort. Because the weather being 113 degrees it did slow us down a bit. Overall, it was a nice getaway that we needed and we were happy that we chose Westin La Polama Resort and Spa Tucson for our time away. Thank you Westin La Polama Resort and Spa!
